The studio is deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend, artist, sculptor, craftsman and collaborator Gary Christian.

Gary and James shared a close friendship spanning 38 years. From the inception of fitzpatrick+partners 25 years ago, Gary was also a constant presence and valued collaborator within our studio.

His contribution was remarkable in its breadth. He brought the insight of an artist and philosopher, the eye of a sculptor, the precision of a model maker and the skill of a craftsman capable of making or fabricating almost anything.
His paintings, sculptures, models and bespoke building elements are embedded throughout our work. His deep understanding of materials, particularly steel, shaped both the details he made and the way we thought about architecture.

Gary was generous with his time and knowledge, calm and honest in his counsel, and fearless in his questioning.

His influence remains all around us, in the studio, in the buildings he helped create and in the question we will continue to ask: “What would Gary think?”.

We offer our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his wife, Cath McKinnon; his daughter, Shar Christian; and his many dear friends and family members.
